M&O—Sebastian Herkner, Designer of the Year

January 2019—Maison&Objet, the renowned lifestyle show in Paris, bestowed its Designer of the Year Award on German designer Sebastian Herkner.

At the age of 37, Herkner is unquestionably one of the industry’s hottest designers at the moment with 21 projects on the go in 2018 for a range of different companies including Moroso, Dedon, Thonet and Lintello. Herker studied at Offenbach University of Art and Design, was an intern with Stella McCartney in London in 2003/2004 and founded his own design studio based in Offenbach am Main in 2006. He has always had a passion for merging different cultural influences and combining traditional craftsmanship with new technology. This innovative style has earned Herkner recognition and numerous awards over the years, including the 2011 German Design Award in the Newcomer category.

One of the designs that really helped Herkner become a household name was the Bell Table for ClassiCon in 2012. The piece is unique in its fragile but functional beauty, with a counterintuitive glass base and metal top. Each Bell Table is handmade with hand-blown glass, meaning it is unique right down to the bumps and bubbles found in the glass.

Herkner, who says he “never misses a session of Maison&Objet” was honored by the award and saw it as an “amazing opportunity to show off [his] design philosophy.” He exhibited his work at the Maison&Objet show in Paris from January 18-22.
