Green façades for Berlin
PHED Engeldamm in Berlin
The “Passive House Engeldamm” (PHED) was conceived as a signature building and a prime example of social-ecological housing in the former East-West border zone between Berlin-Mitte and Kreuzberg. Winner of the Federation of German Architects’ audience prize in 2012, the building is enclosed by a distinctive X-TEND stainless steel mesh façade. The stainless steel curtain that hangs in front of the balconies serves as fall protection. Rectangular mesh panels fitted to L-sections are integrated in the mesh spaces without any additional substructure to form “floating windows”.
