VILLA A, CATANIA

The tangibility of the past and the impalpability of the future add up to an eco-friendly building

The intimacy and hugeness of natural forms and volumes belonging to the past cohabit with today’s luminous extroversion, minimalist shapes and basic materials in this refurbishment and extension project carried out under the direction of the French firm A-OMA. Characterized by a mindful attention to the environment, the project reflects energy efficiency concepts, an appropriate use of materials and the enhancement of the building’s historical origins.

The refinement of the project is immediately evidenced by the outdoor spaces. The austere geometry of the site, standing on a slope looking out onto the sea, is underpinned by a long stretch of water used as a swimming pool, which inherits the grey tones of the seabed typical of the coastal area of Catania, to become an integral part of the landscape.

The wood and stone materials used in the interior design project pursue the design strategy applied to the external spaces, to create continuity between the two areas.
