RESIDENTIAL HOUSE, CAYMAN ISLANDS

Hurricane protection required on residential property; required to be removable when building is occupied

The owners of a well known hotel chain approached us because they were looking for inconspicuous hurricane protection for their house in the Cayman Islands.

We custom designed 23 windload rated rolling doors in 19 different sizes. We also recommended using stainless steel - not only for corrosion protection, but also to blend in with the design of the house. The door coils at the top are situated on the floor of the balcony and hidden in the balcony’s railing system.

The guides and support tubes of the doors are designed to be removable, so at the end of hurricane season they can be stored remotely while the house is in use.

The doors were in place when Hurricane Dean struck in 2007. While the hurricane brought gusts of wind up to 175 mph, the windload rated rolling doors successfully protected the property against damage.
