Wireless components for KNX RF

New possibilities through KNX RF

For many years, KNX has been a standard in wired building automation. The focus here is on providing smart control with such aspects as security, energy efficiency and comfort. A KNX system can also communicate wirelessly, which makes it even more user-friendly in daily use. Furthermore, KNX radio (KNX RF) is as standardised and manufacturer-independent as the wired KNX (KNX TP). Elsner Elektronik sees KNX RF as an ideal addition to wired KNX systems, offering various KNX RF components. The advantages of the wireless standard are found especially in the field of expansion activities. With wireless connections, new installations can be integrated into an existing KNX system at little cost, for example when introducing upgrades. Additionally, mobile operating devices, such as a KNX remote control, can be used. Even an entire KNX installation can be completed with just KNX RF. The KNX RF premium product offered by Elsner is the Remo KNX RF radio remote control.

Radio remote control as central operating unit

The Remo KNX RF radio remote control is a comfortable addition to any KNX system. It convinces with its flat and handy design. In 2017, this wireless hand-held transmitter was given the prestigious Red Dot award for its high design quality. The colour touchscreen can be used to dim lights, position shade drives, adjust room temperature and save or load scenes over 32 channels. After setup in ETS 5, the remote control communicates directly with KNX RF devices using a media coupler with participants in the KNX TP system. The user can change the names of the radio channels and the display sequence of the channels directly on the screen. Customisation is always possible, independently from the integrator and the ETS. Remo KNX RF can be charged with an optional standard commercial charging device with a micro-USB cable.

Radio motor control units for shade and window control

A shade or window drive can be wirelessly integrated in your KNX system by using such radio motor control units as KNX RF-MSG-ST. The motor control unit is plugged using STAK3/STAS3 connectors between the drive and the power supply, and is adjusted via ETS 5. Functions can be configured in detail, such as for compensating the downtime of the drive. KNX RF-MSG-ST has automatic runtime measurement and scene storage functions, as well as a short-time limit and movement limits. It can be used, for example, to make it possible to wirelessly control the drive of your blinds. It can also receive automatic and manual commands from the KNX system. Using the retransmitter function, it forwards the received radio signal to the other radio actuators, thus increasing the radio range.

Media coupler as interface between wire and radio

A media coupler is needed whenever KNX wireless components need to communicate with wired KNX devices. KNX RF LC-TP by Elsner Elektronik is such an interface, allowing data exchange in both directions. For example, diagnostics values or traffic (bus load) are displayed, as well as the reception quality of the connected devices. Like all Elsner KNX RF devices, it uses the KNX RF S-mode to communicate.

USB-stick for KNX RF

With the KNX RF USB-stick as a PC interface for Microsoft Windows, the user gets a direct access from their PC to the KNX system via KNX RF. The USB-stick and the ETS software (version 5 or later) can be used to address, program and diagnose KNX RF devices. This requires operating the USB-stick via a USB-port of the computer. The necessary drivers are installed automatically. A practical tool for configuring KNX RF system is made available as a result.
