Stainless steel mesh providing sun shading

GKD’s After School Special

The spirit of the American high schools is world famous. Being the centre of social life with its competitions and the pride for the home team, school days shape a person's identity for an entire life. Consequently, DLR Group’s architects transformed this spirit and integrated it unorthodoxly into the architecture of the Piper High School in Kansas. The entrance area of the school building was clad with about 159 m² of GKD’s stainless steel mesh Omega 1510, providing sun shading and daylighting. Visual highlight is the image of a pirate’s head, the school’s mascot, which was etched into the mesh. Looking from above the main entrance area, the pirate welcomes visitors and students and demonstrates how modern architecture can transport school spirit and foster a creative environment.
