DANISH CRAFTS COLLECTION 18

The latest curated objects from the award-winning Danish Crafts Collection

In the latest edition of our e-magazine, we cross four continents to study the rise of handcrafted design from top to bottom. However, we don’t hit one of the craftsmanship capitals: Denmark. Fortunately, the Danish Crafts Collection has our back.

Every year, they select some of the best Danish-made products and make the rounds of international trade fairs with the collection. This year marked the eighteenth edition of the Crafts Collection, and we got a peek at Maison & Objet. Some of the objects were familiar, like Nikolaj Steenfatt’s Hardened Leather Chair, and even more were surprising and delightful.

Ranging from furniture to textiles, the products on display offer viable high-quality alternatives to mass-produced consumer goods. Much of the collection has a distinct Scandinavian aesthetic with light wood and muted colors, but a few of the products step completely out of the box. Take, for example, the MYX lamp by Jonas Edvard Nielsen. It is quite literally grown out of mycelium threads over a three week period at which point the edible oyster mushrooms are harvested and the remaining material is dried. The resulting lamp shade is strong, lightweight and entirely biodegradable.

Some of our other favorites include Rikke Hagen‘s recyclable Nora stool made from cork and steel, a cradle-to-cradle project made in Portugal, as well as the lovely blown-glass Half containers from Marion Fortat.
