DRAWING GLASS

Hand Drawn Glass

During our visit to the Paris Design Week in September, we attended the Drawing Glass exhibition at the plush St Sulpice Christian Lacroix boutique. The Italian design workshop Fabrica presented a limited edition collection of glass pieces.

In the face of computer domination and the rise of 3D printing, the workshop’s purpose was to bring a group of designers back to the essentials: pencil and paper. Led by Sam Baron, the designers participated in a drawing class and produced a hand drawn image. These drawings were then given to Massimo Lunardon, a skilled glass blower, who brought them to life in 3D, freestyling to produce his interpretation of what he saw on paper.

The result gives a unique beauty to the object, ironically bringing the presence of the black and white drawings to the same level as the existing piece. This collection is a collaborative project illustrating how design is a practice led by communication between producer and designer. Each design comes complete with its original drawing. Guest artists include: Formafantasma, Dean Brown, Charlotte Juillard, Giorgia Zanellato, Ryu Yamamoto and Valentine Carretta.
