FUTURE STARS? EXHIBITION AT THE ARAM GALLERY

An exploration of seven fresh talents and their innovative designs

Curated by Héloïse Parke, The Aram Gallery’s Future Stars? exhibition brings together seven forward-thinking designers at the very start of their career. Each of the chosen designers has an unorthodox, experimental approach to design, and through these select few, the exhibition captures the ingenuity, research and breadth of skill that serves as a larger motor for the industry itself.

The objects on display turn the most basic, mundane objects on their heads. For example, we all have a basic idea of what constitutes a shoe, but Cat Potter‘s sculptural shoes are almost unrecognizable as such. And forget about the standard park bench. Dutch designer Thor Ter Kulve’s Parkbench Bubble brings a private space into the public sphere. Oh, and it also charges your electronic devices using solar power.

Material experimentation also figures deeply in the exhibit. Lola Lely’s elegant side tables utilize a hybrid material made from wood and leather that is both soft and strong. James Shaw used recycled thermo plastic to create wacky Baroque furniture, while Sophie Thomas presented a series of jewelry interestingly made from Corian.

Another trend, geometric forms and/or graphic patterns were seen in most of the objects, including Maria Jeglinska’s fresh and bright Drawn Objects and Kim Thome’s tonal Layer Screen and bold Light Array installation.

The exhibition runs through October 25th at The Aram Gallery in Covent Garden, London. Learn even more by visiting their website.
