aranda\lasch forms railing series for gallery ALL at design miami/

on the occasion of design miami/ 2015, gallery ALL presents the first three elements of new york-based studio aranda\lasch‘s most recent collection.

the ‘railing’ series comprises two chairs and a stool named ‘R1′, ‘R2′ and ‘R3′, each which engage the use of structural modular loops to form a practical seating object.

the ‘railing’ collection continues the research of studio founders benjamin aranda and chris lasch into modularity, through a novel language of arcs. each seat comprises a single loop made up of many circles, but not the simple, infinite geometry we traditionally perceive; rather, the chairs and stool probe the possibilities of what a circle can be, neither whole nor complete, but instead growing into itself. the geometry that aranda\lasch invent for the furniture’s framework refuses its own dimension and seemingly fights to be endless.

both the chairs (‘R1′ and ‘R2′) and railing stool (‘R3′) are composed of one line that meanders through a lattice of fractal circles, eventually coming back to itself to form a continuous loop. this configuration allows the distinct pieces to be created from the same set of modular stainless steel pipe arcs. upholstery wraps the metal to form a soft, comfortable space for sitting. this plush component is seen in a selection of colors (off-white, black, green) and textures (foam and leather), reimagining the material language of bicycle handle-bar grips in a loopy dimension. the three objects presented at design miami/ 2015 are exhibited in both silicone foam and hand-sewn leather upholstery styles.
