1180 Fourth Street is an uber green housing development for low-income families in San Francisco

1180 Fourth Street, a recently completed mixed-use housing development for low-income and formerly homeless families, occupies an entire city block in a fast-developing new urban neighborhood in San Francisco.

Architecture firms Mithun-Solomon, Kennerly Architecture and Planning and Full Circle Architects teamed up to create this multi-family residence in Mission Bay, a neighborhood which was, until recently, dominated by rail yards, warehouses and parking lots.

The design team decided to break up the six-story building and emphasize the various common spaces such as courts, lobbies and community rooms. They introduced four-foot-long perforated, vertical metal sunshades that punctuate the building’s sharply angled prow at the street corner. Using different heights and facades on the inner and street-facing side, the architects added variety to the look of the neighborhood.

The building offers a mix of one, two and three bedroom dwellings, complemented with common areas such as a teen room, computer lab, fitness room, flex rooms, and a community room with kitchen. Residents can enjoy the common courtyard where they can organize barbecues, show movies and use secure play areas for family childcare units. The project is certified Green Point Rated 127.
