Plastic fantastic: My Kilos launch 'Black Stracciatella' at Stockholm Furniture Fair
Forgoing traditional and trendy materials like marble (with its precious lustre) and concrete (utilitarian and yet versatile), the Berlin-based design studio My Kilos chose polyethylene, common plastic, as its main material for their latest collection, unveiled at Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair.
Black Stracciatella', as the collection is called, takes plastic into uncharted territory without reinventing the wheel. Speckled with white – like ‘snowflakes in the moonshine of night’ – the poppy plastic ‘brings our thoughts back to the good old 1980s and the Memphis movement’, the studio explains. (And no doubt the indulgent gelato of Italy, too.)
All four pieces of the collection – one chopping board, one bread box and two tables – employ plastic as a main surface, adding steel tube legs in the case of the 'VVV Table', coated sheet metal legs for the 'Busy Petite Table' or a sleek steel bassinet for the bread box. Most enchanting of all though was the way their stand at the international gathering looked and felt decidedly fresh, without a shred of vanity (it also happened to serve up a killer espresso).
The furniture and design label of 45 Kilo (which deals exclusively with developing interiors and redesigning products), My Kilos is the work of joint founders Philipp Schöpfer and Daniel Klapsing (the studio now also includes Michael Bernard, Tal Engel, Lisa Ertel, Lea Kaufmann, Thomas Pieper and Deni Pavicic). Together they specialise in redesigning specific items. ‘A lot of designs are based on specific models,’ they explain. ‘My Kilos keep what they like and update the rest.’
