The Redskins’ fancy new BIG stadium in DC will be surrounded by a moat
Bjarke Ingels Group unveiled their design for the new Redskins stadium in Washington.
The bowl-shaped facility will have an expressive outer wall surrounded by a moat. Although the location of the future sporting facility has yet to be selected, the architects have completed a design that offers visitors the opportunity to engage with the stadium in several innovative ways.
The design is meant to support a wide array of activities in and around the main sporting areas. BIG’s renderings show people rollerblading, kayaking, and abseiling, which creates an impression that the stadium will cater to different activities before and after football games.
The Redskins currently play at the 82,000-seat FedEx Field in Maryland designed by HOK in the 1990s. Some of the reasons behind the need for a new stadium relate to the criticism of the FedEx Field for disadvantaged sight lines and accessibility issues. The new stadium will be built in the Washington DC metro area, which will make it more accessible for fans to reach.
