Note Design Studio Stars in Residence Magazine's 'Designer of the Year' Exhibition in Stockholm

It came as no surprise when Residence Magazine awarded Note Design Studio’s seven collaborators with the 2015 Designer of the Year prize.

The Stockholm-based multidisciplinary design studio which has been forging an identifiable name for itself in the cool and conceptual embrace of Scandinavian design since 2008, has caused quite the stir with the studied furniture items and expressive décor that it has introduced for both private homes, such as Casa Ljungdahl, as well as public spaces, such as Finefood Café & Restaurant.

The exhibition accompanying the Residence Magazine Designer of the Year award, which ran from Feb 10 – 28th 2015, was in collaboration with and presented at Stockholm’s ArkDes architecture museum and was curated by stylist, Lotta Agaton, the creative director of Residence magazine.

For the exhibition, Agaton interpreted the work of Note Design Studio as stylized vignettes, each monochromatically framing a particular “room” of an imaginary house with the soft color palette and design vocabulary that Note has become associated with. The sandy, wood-toned “kitchen” vignette was highlighted by an unexpected pop of apricot in the form of a lacquered light fixture; the moody, gray-toned “living room” featured a splash of white from a picture frame; while the all-white “bedroom” seemed like just the place to curl up under the provided down-filled comforter. In all honesty, we wouldn’t mind moving in to this house!

Today, it is almost impossible for a designer or company to launch a new piece of furniture without a well-styled image. It has become so essential that it is now a part of the designer’s creative process

Agaton’s vignettes emphasized the importance that styling plays in today’s increasingly social media conscious design world. “Today, it is almost impossible for a designer or company to launch a new piece of furniture without a well-styled image. It has become so essential that it is now a part of the designer’s creative process,” Agaton said in a statement, emphasizing the importance that composition and context plays for any new piece of furniture and how they influence and alter a design. “This exhibition is my interpretation of the work of Note Design Studio, but it is also a commentary on how we consume and sell furniture today,” Agaton continued, remarking on the power of an image in completing the design of any item or project.

Perhaps this is a main reason why Note Design Studio is making such an impact; not only do they provide their clients with unique content, i.e. the furniture and accessories, to suit their lifestyles, but they also provide them with a context, i.e. an environment, that is tailor made to suit their clients’ contemporary needs.

Note Design Studio has also received the “Designer of the Year” Award at the Elle Decoration Swedish Design Awards 2016.
