Bruce Munro’s multicolored Field of Lights blooms in stunning desert display

Bruce Munro was taken aback by the beauty and energy of the Red Desert landscape in Australia on a 1992 trek to Uluru. The visit sparked a series of bright light installations that have spread across the world, only to finally return to its original inspirational site in 2016 as Uluru’s own Field of Light display. The installation is a web of fiber optic lights that weave through the plains of Uluru, illuminating glass and acrylic orbs in a multitude of colors.

Munro named his latest installation, available for viewing now through March of next year, Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakutjaku. This translates to “looking at lots of beautiful lights” in Pitjantjatjara, the language of the Aboriginal locals. And that is just what visitors can do when taking in this marvelous display.

Munro said about the piece, “I wanted to create an illuminated field of stems that, like the dormant seed in a dry desert, would burst into bloom at dusk with gentle rhythms of light under a blazing blanket of stars.” He has created this vivid presentation in Atlanta, Houston, Norfolk, yet the essence of the beauty he is trying to convey is truly at home in Uluru, the spot that inspired it all.
