yoshitaka uchino & YDS architect's house K uses a second floor terrace to expel light below

yoshitaka uchino & YDS architect’s ‘house K’ is a living space located in kumamoto, japan that responds to natural light. the modular white building contains a terrace which joins the left and right side of the structure together, which allows sun to flood through the center of the interior. voids have been inserted into the roof of the first floor which expels a light illumination over the large kitchen and lounge below.

the architects state that they ‘intended to design a space which allowed the occupant to experience the natural elements outside. these environmental features are a very important part of our life, and unfortunately we as human beings have lost these senses in our daily routine’. the family house reflects this desire by providing a minimal backdrop to exhibit an ever-changing play between light and shadow.
