Gardening at a Distance

To some, high-tech gardening is anathema. But connected monitoring, control and information relay devices have begun sprouting across the landscape

A smart garden project at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show featured a device which monitors plant condition and transmits data via the web. Other smartphone-linked products on the market include soil and weather sensors, automatic watering controls and robotic lawnmowers. A related device, an indoor-outdoor connected weather station, collects data and sends an alert when it’s time to air out the home to eliminate pollutants. Current technology is aimed at individuals, but developments could make it suitable for public green spaces.
