Lace-like screen inspired by Portuguese tiles cover the rear facade of the charming Restelo House in Lisbon

A lace-like pattern inspired by traditional Portuguese tiles covers the rear side of this charming house in Lisbon. Architect João Tiago Aguiar completely redrew the back of the house, named after the nearby shopping street Restelo, and create a mansard roof with three minimalist openings.

The rear fascia features a series of windows and shutters that can be completely closed to form a uniform, semi-transparent screen, or opened to let natural light into the interior. This delicate canvas references patterns of traditional Portuguese tiles and functions like a skin that filters light and provides optimal levels of privacy for the residents.

The architect reorganized the ground floor to house a spacious living room with a kitchen and dining area. Hidden behind a white volume coated with grate lines and separating different spaces are the closet, guest toilet and storage. Leaning on the left side of this volume, a staircase connects the ground floor and the upstairs private area. Additional living space was introduced in the attic formed by a mansard roof and offering views of the garden.
