Hidden refuge with breathtaking views is only accessible via helicopter or clifftop farm track

If you really want to get away from it all and unplug, look no further than the Scrubby Bay House designed by Pattersons Associates Architects.

Available to rent for up to 14 guests, this remote cedar-clad farmhouse on New Zealand’s South Island is a hidden sanctuary that’s so isolated, it’s only accessible via helicopter or clifftop farm track. Those who do succeed in making it out there will be rewarded with breathtaking views and a private windswept bay. Located on a 4,000-acre Annandale farm site, the Scrubby Bay House was designed to look like “a piece of slowly aging farm driftwood” with a timber facade that develops a rich patina over time. Despite its rustic appearance, the beach house boasts a luxurious interior with bespoke furniture, glass, and stone. Large openings frame views of the sea and bring sounds of the waves and cooling winds indoors.

In addition to a sun-drenched deck, the holiday home includes three oceanfront bedroom suites and a bunkroom that sleeps up to eight. A large open-plan dining and living space can comfortably accommodate all guests. The house is also equipped with wifi, a swimming pool, spa pool, and open fire. The rate at Scrubby Bay starts at $4595 NZD a night in the off-season.
