Kayak instructor builds tiny woodland home for $11,000

Kayak instructor Brian Schulz built this beautiful Japanese-style home in the forests of Nehalem, Oregon for under $11,000! The home is made entirely from locally-sourced salvaged wood, and it was built in less than a year.

Schulz’s tiny woodland cottage measures 14′ x 16′, and it was built entirely from materials gathered at a local recycling yard and savaged wood from the surrounding forest. The resourceful instructor also collected some floating timber while kayaking and harvested felled trees after a big storm.

Taking inspiration from traditional Japanese architecture, Schulz designed the minimal home with exposed joints, low wooden furniture, paper lanterns and Wabi Sabi aesthetics. He also plans to add shoji screens to the windows and plant bamboo around the cottage. Love it? You can rent it out on Airbnb!
