Art for containers

Although temporary, the shelters made by Niederstätter for construction sites and communal use are an attempt to give identity to their function by turning them into small landmarks.

Support for cultural projects is one of Maria Niederstätter's favourite business endeavours. She is at the helm of the Niederstätter company in South Tyrol, a supplier of containers, cranes and other equipment for construction sites. Her kind of financial support is not merely a subsidy, but an actual investment. In an inspiring example, the company has teamed up with artists for the external decoration of containers that are rented for specific uses.

For a vocational school in Merano, containers were used for changing rooms, and the project has been much appreciated. The artist Elisabeth Hölzl painted the prefabricated modules in blue and pink, visually diversifying the space reserved for boys and girls. The writing “boys & girls” not only distinguishes the two, but also connects the compartments visually instead of separating them.

Another project, called Cicli–Räder (“bikes” in Italian and German), had the aim of making recognisable and immediately visible a bicycle storage located in a secluded spot. The artist succeeded in rising to this challenge by using a green-and-white colour combination that associates with ecology, environment, vitality and mobility.

One of Niederstätter’s most recent cultural initiatives is the building of a temporary school for the Alessandro Manzoni middle school in Bressanone. The provisional 1,400-square-metre structure was assembled in a mere four weeks. In addition to the construction speed, the result features amazingly high-quality finishing and technical qualities, thanks to which this prefabricated building offers the same performance as a traditional building. The artist Claudia Barcheri applied coloured vertical stripes to create a feeling of lightness and cheerfulness that are unusual in this type of emergency construction.
