Designing Unique Objects for Museum Shops

Unique and limited-edition art objects are all the rage at exclusive outlets, including museum shops

While customers are less enamoured of mass-produced “designer label” products, recent London auction prices are through the roof for truly individual collectibles. Stores are even launching their own limited editions in collaboration with designers. In parallel developments, go-betweens are introducing designers to producers, fueling the market. Others assemble a diversity of unusual objects reminiscent of the eclectic collections of 19th-century explorers. New York is a hotbed of these activities. At the same time, those hunting new talent scour design fairs, schools and internet sites.
