Can striking architecture shape the activities taking place within a building’s walls?
The University of Pennsylvania’s Pennovation Center was designed to generate interaction among its innovator tenants and to draw passers-by into the equation. People with vastly different projects routinely rub shoulders, facilitating cross-fertilization, be it on the broad concrete entry steps or in co-working areas. There are open-plan studios, informal seating zones and the Pitch Bleacher, where experimenters can present their work to all who care to listen. There’s even a drone test space. One of the architects described it as “more of a machine than an office building.”
