AMP

The Danish designer Simon Legald has designed a sophisticated range of lamps called Amp for Normann Copenhagen.

The range consists of one table lamp and two pendant lamps. Amp is characterised by its high-quality materials of glass and marble that add a visual fragility and sensuous heaviness. Amp has a nostalgic and at the same time, contemporary feel.

The idea for the lamp's shape came when the designer was restoring an old 60's radio at home. While searching for spare parts for the radio, he was captivated by the glow that emits from the tube amplifier. The simple oval shape and the glow of the bulb is an obvious reference to this, just as the name Amp refers to the English term; tube amplifier. The proportions for each lamp have been carefully designed. For example, the marble sockets of the two pendant lamps are smaller than the marble base of the table lamp to

emphasise their different functions.

The designer has visually highlighted the essential details, such as the way the shade rests on the socket. By combining the two natural materials, an exciting contrast between the transparent, light glass and the solid, heavy marble is created. The decorative bulb emits a stunning glow though the either gold or smoke coloured glass lampshades. The lamp isavailable with a socket or base in impactful black marble or striking jade green, emphasising the natural colourful elegance of the material.

Simon Legald says: "One can't always define where an idea for a new product comes from. But this time the inspiration was drawn directly from radio and hi-fi equipment. This is obvious in the design of Amp. There is something special about the round, transparent shape of a tube amplifier that I thought would translate nicely into a lamp. I opted for the same type of glass used for an

hourglass, as the shape had to be curved and narrowed in. To counterbalance the delicacy of the glass, I used marble. I think that the two materials work well together."

The Amp Lamps come with matching textile cord, and dimmer switches for the table lamp. The shades can easily be removed when changing bulbs.
