MERCURE LAMP TILTS TO TURN ON

Lucie Le Guen designs a light that is inspired by the mercury tilt switch

Mercure is a playful and elegant lamp by French designer Lucie Le Guen. Much like the obsolete mercury tilt switch from which it is inspired, the lamp is tilted to be turned on and off. Replacing the toxic liquid mercury is a cluster of steel marbles. When tilted towards the base of the lamp, the marbles complete the electric circuit and illuminate the bulb. The lamp is simply tilted in the opposite direction to be turned off.

The movement of the marbles is visible through the blown glass, encouraging users to interact and play with the object. It’s shape is even reminiscent of a toy yet the object remains at once functional and sophisticated. Le Guen will be presenting the lamp as part of the New Talent Competition at the International Design Festival Berlin which begins this week.
