MAX LIPSEY COMBINES SEEMINGLY INCONGRUOUS ELEMENTS FOR HYBRID DOMESTICS

Eight playful prototypes that draw inspiration from unlikely sources

Max Lipsey is a young American designer currently based in the Netherlands. At the recent Salone Satellite event in Milan, he presented a new collection of furniture and accessories titled Hybrid Domestics.

Composed of eight prototypes, the aptly named collection is a hybrid of ideas and inspirations. It is a mishmash of improbable elements coming together as contemporary objects that infuse the home with something beyond pure function. Take, for example, the Monna chair which is inspired by ancient stone carvings that depict the voluptuous curves of the feminine form. Or the Scrim Shelf whose colorful mesh is reminiscent of the translucent scrim fabric used to hide construction sites.

Lipsey’s personal fascination with craftsmanship also shows in the collection’s materials and fabrication. Rather than using industrial processes, Lipsey privileges his hands. His Stuben Table and Bench explore age-old alpine stuben furniture, simply replacing the wooden legs with steel. He also reinvents the simple wooden peg using copper and creates a dining chair made from welded steel.

The collection also includes storage accessories for the desk and multifunctional object for storing books or magazines. Check out the entire collection below!
