DDW 2014: PIET HEIN EEK’S FLATPACK STOOLS FOR NLXL LAB

Flatpack, plywood stools printed with famous masterpieces from the Rijksmuseum

NLXL and Dutch designer Piet Hein Eek have been making magic since launched their Scrapwood Wallpaper in 2010. The collection of scanned scrapwood prints was so successful that the second edition of Scrapwood Wallpaper made its appearance at last year’s Dutch Design Week. And at this year’s Dutch Design Week, Piet Hein Eek is presenting a series of flatpack stools designed exclusively for NLXL LAB.

NLXL LAB takes the brand beyond wallpaper and into the realm of product design. The plywood stools represent one of the brand’s first collaborations. To create the printed stools, Piet Hein Eek used the latest wood cutting and printing technology.

The designer also directly collaborated with Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum for the design. Each stool is printed with a famous masterpiece from the museum’s collection. The hope is to eventually collaborate with other museums to create limited editions that could be sold on site.
