DDW 2014: DUTCH LANDSCAPES FOR ICE INTERNATIONAL

The design brand presents a new collection of rugs from four Dutch design couples

Much like wallpaper, rugs are experiencing a design renaissance. Traditional rugs and carpets obviously retain their decorative value, but more and more contemporary designers are using this design staple differently. With their Dutch Landscapes collection, Dutch design brand ICE International reinvents the rug thanks to four Dutch design couples: Claire & Roderick Vos, Jeanine & Piet Hein Eek, Petra Janssen & Edwin Vollebergh, Kiki van Eijk & Joost van Bleiswijk.

Each individual designer created one rug for the collection, a rug imbued with personal inspiration and narratives. Jeanine Eek Keizer’s design is reminiscent of her parents’ sofa, while Piet Hein Eek created a multipurpose rug for public spaces. Petra Janssen rethought the Persian rug with Dutch folklore, and Edwin Vollebergh drew his inspiration from The Rolling Stones. Joost van Bleiswijk turned the stereotypical sketch of a rug into the real thing, while Kiki van Eijk recreated a brilliant watercolor effect. Roderick Vos paid homage to tradition and his Asian heritage by creating a mosaic of different patterns selected from ancient, hand-knotted Tibetan rugs.

We particularly love the hand-tufted rug by Claire Vos. It expresses her interest in gradients and texture, and surprises the onlooker by changing color depending on the angle at which it is viewed.

Beyond the refreshing and surprising aesthetic of the collection, it’s fascinating to see the clear influence that each of the couples has on one another’s design – a sort of design osmosis. Perhaps couples who design together, stay together.

The entire collection will be on display at Dutch Design Week from October 18th to 26th.
