TABU COLLECTION BY EUGENI QUITLLET FOR ALIAS

A quick look at Eugeni Quitllet’s most recent collection for Alias

Eugeni Quitllet has added wooden chairs to his resume; the TABU collection for Alias made news at this year’s Salone del Mobile. This collection turns traditional woodworking on its head through the use of digital technology—the chairs are digitally carved from FSC certified wood using CNC. Quitllet explains that this collection is a reinterpretation of traditional craft, using digital technology and modern materials to highlight the natural characteristics of solid wood. The chairs are available in oak, ash or walnut and with a transparent lacquer or a choice of 12 coloured stain finishes. True to Quitllet form, one version of the TABU chair employs a plexiglass backrest, which creates an interesting contrast of traditional and modern.

Eugeni Quitllet is an Ibizan-born designer known for his collaboration with Philippe Starck as well as innovative use of plastic. One of his most notable designs and collaborations with Stark, the Masters Chair in polypropylene, fuses the classic Eames, Saarinen and Jacobsen silhouettes into one single piece for Kartell.
