MANHATTAN LAMP BY RODRIGO CAULA

Solid marble that reveals itself when illuminated

At first glance, the Manhattan Lamp by Canadian designer Rodrigo Caula appears to be a solid, made from two pieces of opaque Carrara marble. But, as the tired idiom states, looks can be deceiving. When illuminated, a dusky orange glow emits from the white marble, suddenly highlighting the characteristic veins of the ancient rock.

In order to achieve the impossibly thin material, the designer invented a special jig for extracting thin pieces of marble from the quarry. The White Carrara thus becomes the lamp shade, while the Black Carrara serves as the base for the light fixture.

A retractable, five-meter cord makes the table lamp adaptable to a variety of different positions and uses.
