WRITING DESK BY DAVID ERICSSON

A copper-covered desk that will change with time

Designed for Swedish manufacturer Friends of Wood, the Writing Desk by David Ericsson is another Scandinavian design gem. Friends of Wood stems from an artistic research project conducted by the designer. He studied the ethical, technical and artistic aspects of wood and the furniture industry. In 2013, the project became its own company.

Ericsson created the Writing Desk as part of the Tønder Collection, which was commissioned as part of the 100th anniversary celebration of Hans Wegner. It is made principally from birch wood, which gives the piece a warm and minimal feel, and oak wood was used for reinforcement where needed.

The surface is covered in copper cloth. Interestingly, when transformed into cloth, copper becomes as warm and flexible as traditional fabrics – with one particularity. With time, the material develops a patina with use and interaction, making the surface entirely unique.

Finally, convenient drawers and accessories offer space for pens and pencils, while leather straps serve as built-in folders.
