NIKOLAJ STEENFATT’S HARDENED LEATHER CHAIR

An innovative young designer that rethinks and renews an old technique

Danish designer Nikolaj Steenfatt makes some seriously cool objects. Each of his creations utilizes common materials in interesting ways. His Hardened Leather Chair is crafted using an old, 100% natural technique for hardening leather. Previously used in the creation of corsets and armor, the leather is soaked in boiling water, then pressed firmly onto a mold and left to dry. Once the mold is removed, the leather remains stiff – so stiff that you can make furniture out of it! Steenfatt places the hardened leather on an ash frame to complete the aesthetic.
