Modern facade made of glassfibre-reinforced concrete

The Mount Stephen Club, designed by architect William Titus Thomas, is a historical monument of Quebec. The historical heritage of this building lies in its architecture. The design approach for the rehabilitation of the old stock and new construction of the hotel Mount Stephen was for lemay architects therein to provide the historical part as a major backdrop in all its glory in the foreground.

The 12-storey hotel complex behind it was adapted to the needs of the existing building in different ways. The symmetry and proportions take into account both the urban context as well as the neo-classical elements. The facade has been designed as a contrasting background to the unique character of Mount Stephen to emphasize one more time. The aim was to create an abstract pattern that is not in competition with the neoclassical decorations of the historic building. Inspiration the architect of tapestries, wallpaper and lace fabrics brought in Mount Stephen Club.

The resulting unique design for the building envelope of the hotel has been realized with concrete skin by Rieder. The 1,200 m2 facade panels made of fibreC underline the intention to create an equally precious as a shining object which simultaneously represents the expression of the elegant historic building in the foreground, while itself contributing to the allure of the iconic square. 1,000 concrete skin elements in a cross shape and the different sizes of window openings provide a spectacular luminous space pattern in the dark.
