Lamino by Nudie Jeans

“To have made one good chair maybe isn’t such a bad lifetime accomplishment”

The quote comes from the creator of the Lamino chair, Yngve Ekström. And claiming that a chair that was voted “the 20th Century's Best Swedish Furniture Design” by Swedish interior decoration magazine, Sköna Hem’s readers, is only a good chair is an understatement. 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of Swedish furniture producer Swedese, to pay honor this, Nudie Jeans were asked to do an interpretation of this design classic.

Design, Function & Tradition

Those were key words when Yngve Ekström designed the Lamino chair. His vision was clear; a simple, comfortable chair, so he designed an easychair made from glue-laminated bentwood veneer with a seat made from sheepskin. With its distinct shape, it has been a design classic since 1956 that a lot of people recognize and have some relation to. It’s been produced in over 300 000 copies, and it’s still made by skilled craftsmen at the factory in Vaggeryd, Småland, Sweden.

The Naked Truth About Denim

Since the start in 2001, Nudie Jeans has conveyed the idea that a pair of well-worn jeans says a lot about the person carrying them. To be alive is to be vulnerable. Scars and beauty marks we get from just living becomes part of our legacy and history, and the same goes for both furniture and jeans. To us, ageing, and what makes us unique, is the most beautiful part of being alive.

The Nudie Jeans Interpretation

We chose materials that become more beautiful over time. The frame is made with untreated birch veneer, with a few layers of orange colored veneer in-between – which of course comes from the orange stitching of our selvage. The seat comes in three different variations: a dry, organic, Kaihara selvage option, a pre-washed, hand-treated selvage option made by our washing experts at ITAC in Italy, and a natural leather option, vegetable tanned by Tärnsjö Garveri.

Amnesty International is a non-governmental organization focused on human rights. Since 1961 they’ve been fighting for basic freedoms of all human beings, including freedom of speech and thought, women’s rights and the right to not be discriminated against, to name a few. Over the years, Amnesty and Nudie Jeans have been collaborated on a bunch of different projects to raise awareness about Amnesty’s work. And for this project, Swedese and Nudie Jeans donate €50 for each chair sold to Amnesty.
