Wilkhahn’s IN and website given two special mentions as part of the German Design Award 2016

IN has already shown what a dynamic mover it is in offices worldwide. And now the youngest member of the Wilkhahn office-chair family is walking away with more and more design accolades. IN recently received a Gold Award at NeoCon in Chicago for its mix of innovative mechanics, high-tech seat and 3D Formstrick (form-fit knit). The chair’s athletic design has now also won over the judges of the renowned “German Design Award” 2016. They gave it a special mention in the office-furniture category. The panel thought the new Wilkhahn website was worth a special mention too.

High-tech with an athletic appeal

The panel judging the German Design Award gives a special mention to products whose designs offer especially interesting solutions. It pays tribute to companies and designers who are bold innovators. “This latest achievement proves we’re on the right track. To produce IN we combined very innovative technologies with a fresh, almost athletic look. So in design terms, we've also entered new territory”, explains Dr Jochen Hahne, Wilkhahn President. He goes on to say that the 2-component technology with plastic injection-moulded seat and backrest have been applied for the first time here. The result is a chair that’s a combination of both very firm and very elastic areas. “For plastic experts it's a real triumph. Equally impressive is the form-fit knit backrest with different thicknesses and elasticity. It acts as a lumbar support and is an exceptional design feature”, adds Michael Englisch, Director of Design and Development at Wilkhahn.

The goal was to tap into a medium-range price segment and offer the health benefits of an athletic-dynamic office chair to a broader variety of users. This strategy is now paying dividends. A few weeks after the launch, the number of IN office chairs Wilkhahn had sold for projects in Germany and abroad had already run into five figures. A recent example is a major bank in Frankfurt am Main which has specified IN as the new standard for its back offices.
