Upgrade for Chesser House in Adelaide
In redesigning the building plinth, mph architects have given Chesser House a contemporary make-over. Wilkhahn seating in the lobby invites people to stop and linger.
Chesser House in Adelaide, Australia, consists of two building segments that could hardly be more different: while the plinth with its brick facade stems from the colonial era, the 12-storey office high-rise with its blue reflective glass facade is typical of post-modernism. Centred arches complete the facade at the top, whereas protruding sections and slanted edges structure the building on the horizontal. The smooth facade with its grid pattern lends the tower a seamless appearance in stark contrast to the fine texture of the historical building. The redesign of the facade and lobby has now given the plinth to the building a more modern look. The goal was to offer tenants and visitors a proper reception area and to enhance the identity of the building ensemble overall.
The centrepiece of the design by mph architects is an interactive lightbox that appears to float over the entrance point. During the night this shines light in alternating colours onto the streetscape and also offers an elegant visual connection to the interior. In addition to a café, the lobby also offers a lounge to work in with high-quality furnishing. The suspended lightbox and a vertical garden in the form of a living wall give the whole ground floor that certain something and also guarantee a pleasant indoor climate. The architects chose simple elegance and natural colours for the furniture.
