Luminaires ATEX et antidéflagrants: quelles différences ?

In many cases, we confuse the terms and ATEX explosion proof, and we think they mean the same thing, but this does not reflect reality. In addition, this error can be dangerous for the lighting system, which represents a liability for manufacturers and installers, thus it is necessary to make appropriate distinctions.

ATEX luminaire

The ATEX refers to the atmosphere can be potentially explosive, which is due to gases, vapors, dusts or ignitable fibers contained in this atmosphere. These atmospheres may be generated at a given time or may exist in a continuous manner. ATEX luminaire is designed to be placed in these areas because, by its constitution and materials, it will not cause an explosion. The ATEX term applies to areas such as laboratories, paint facilities, pumps and / or liquid compressors within refrigerators or dryers, among others.

In explosive atmospheres, there are several areas, taking into account various parameters such as the frequency with which the explosive atmosphere appears, its duration and the nature of the explosive atmosphere. We identify six different zones: Zone 0, 1, 2, Zone 20, 21 and 22. Each area requires different characteristics, and therefore must be the promoter or the genius that, under its responsibility, to choose the most suitable luminaire depending on the intended area.

These facilities are defined and regulated by Directive 2014/34 / EU OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 26 February 2014, the harmonization of legislation of Member States concerning equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres .

In addition to the marking area, there are dozens of rules governing this type of lighting, with an average of two or three standards for each type of protection. In the catalog Airfal, you'll also find explosive lighting ( "d" protection) of luminaires with increased safety (protection "e") and restricted breathing (Protection "nR").

To bring to market a new ATEX luminaire, follow a much more complex process than for a conventional tight fixture or industrial luminaire. It is necessary a certified organization approved prototype plan to pass the stage of actual prototype. This model must pass rigorous tests and checks that certify the adequacy of the luminaire and in turn, the manufacturer is subject to mandatory annual audits.

Explosion Proof Lighting

An explosion-proof ATEX luminaire is a fixture that is designed so that in the unlikely event that the potentially explosive atmosphere enters the light, and a spark occurs, or explosion, the explosion occurs inside the luminaire and will spread to the outside, thus avoiding the associated potential risks.

It is very important to note that all fixtures are ATEX explosion proof, but all fixtures are ATEX flameproof. It is therefore necessary to pay special attention to the type of protection needed before choosing a luminaire.

ATEX catalog Airfal

Airfal International is the only Spanish manufacturer that manufactures its own ATEX fixtures, with six fixtures tested meet the established standards. A highlight Pyros, a luminaire, which in addition to the ATEX marking, is explosion-proof thanks to the materials used for the luminaire, and how to unite them. It is the only luminaire Airfal, which in addition to having the ATEX protection, provides for protection "d". Airfal also has in its range the Flame lighting, Secure and Minex, the latter specifically designed for lighting of mines and underground spaces susceptible to gas accumulation. Thus, in the catalog you will find the Airfal Lumex Taurus and lighting, ideal for industrial areas other than mines, particularly with high ceilings.

The R + D department Airfal currently working on the creation of new ATEX models that will be presented in the coming months.
