Villa at the Lake of Constance

Matrix in space

At a new house at Lake Constance, Architects Biehler and Weith display the incredible impact a cleverly considered façade can have on a building.

They have omitted everything which characterises a traditional house: apparent

window frames, visible floor levels, symmetrical roof surfaces and orthogonal

floor plans. The outcome is a sculptural building without comparable scale. The

architects, however, envelop the concrete structure with rear-ventilated, large-format ALUCOBOND® panels, whose dark joints create a grid pattern over the whole building volume. A matrix is generated for the space, creating order and spatially integrating the building with its angles and openings, the gradient of the slants and the resulting perspectives. The large-format

and sheen of the coloured tray panels ensure that the grid format does not make the house look conformist or constrained.
