Luxury Hotel Kameha Grand Bonn - Futuristic architecture on the Rhine with Reynobond aluminium composite panels

The building owner’s vision was to create a “hotel of the 21st century”. The result is a five-star hotel, which has become a top-rate destination also for architecture and design tourists. From afar the building attracts attention with the silver shimmer of its aluminium and glass facade. The entire building, with its dynamic curving design, devotes itself to the surrounding landscape of the Rhine and Siebengebirge mountains. From the sixth to third floors, the building plummets towards the Rhine. In doing so, spacious roof terraces could be integrated into each of these floors as well as an outdoor pool on the third level, which also affords a view onto the Rhine.

Architect Karl-Heinz Schommer designed a building which fits in perfectly with its surroundings. The airiness of the building is on the one hand the result of its aspiring, arcuate form. Its solidity, on the other hand, is played down by the combination of transparent glass and light roof cladding in the form of Reynobond aluminium composite panels. This winning formula is the outcome of sophisticated collaboration between architects, engineers and craftsmen.

The first task was to ensure the technical and physical safety of the roof and facade with its multitude of recesses, edges and connecting lines from the north to south plinths. In addition to numerous complex details, those responsible developed a metal roof construction whereby the metal roof, with a total surface of 4,860 sqm, was constructed over a standing rebate system on a reinforced concrete floor. The outer membrane is constructed from Reynobond aluminium cassettes KH35, each measuring up to 6.73 m x 1.60 m.

The benefits of such cladding were appealing to the architect Karl-Heinz Schommer, both in terms of the shimmering silver appearance and the ease with which it can be transformed. “The many curves and arcs of the building and the possibility to prefabricate large panels were a reason for choosing Reynobond, in addition to the material properties and designs.” The special properties of the material of particular importance to him were durability, low level of maintenance and contribution towards sustainability of the building.
