The Butterfly chair is an icon of 20th century design. Since its creation in 1938, this piece has been revalued over time and, consequently, many replicas have appeared over the decades. The leitmotiv of Butterfly Original is to promote and protect the authenticity of the Butterfly chair or BKF chair. This is our way of worshipping design and architecture, art elevated to its essence in this unique piece.
Although it is also known as BKF —the initials of its creators, the architects Bonet, Kurchan and Ferrari— the Butterfly chair is popularly known as 'butterfly' because of the similarity between the shape of its structure and the silhouette of the insect.
Made from bovine hides from Brittany, France, tanned with vegetable extracts of mimosa and quebracho. In the Barcelona workshop, the cover of our BKF chair is hand-sewn with German Gütermann threads. The master craftsman combines the use of triple feed head machines and hand stitching to achieve the highest level of detail. This cover rests on a 12mm diameter solid steel frame, hand polished and painted in black epoxy.
The design of the Butterfly chair is inspired by nature and it is through the mimicry of patterns already created in our environment —such as the wings of a butterfly— that this graceful yet robust piece is achieved.

It is a museum piece that has had the luxury of residing in the MoMa in New York. The BKF chair radiates history, culture and tradition through every pore. This is a story that completes itself with the passing of years, which enriches it and perfects it even more.
