Elm House, a new architecturally striking business school.

Elm House, the new business school at Brighton University, is part of the £60 million Big Build programme that is transforming the Moulsecoomb campus.

Designed by Hassell Studio, Elm House at the University of Brighton's Moulsecoomb campus is intended to be the architectural highlight of the campus and was created to offer students an innovative experience that links to other areas.

The striking ceramic façade, created by Spanish manufacturer Tempio, evokes Brighton's iconic pier and the flocks of seagulls it attracts. The tiled surface, comprising 14,430 bespoke pieces, represents the process of flux and change that students undergo during their university career.

The construction and design of the entire complex has been carried out in accordance with the highest environmental and sustainability standards. Tempio's ventilated ceramic facade and builders Aliva UK have contributed to this high ecological standard by providing a ceramic facade that has an impressively long life cycle.

Only natural clay is used in Tempio and all its waste is recycled. The Tempio ceramic ventilated façade saves energy costs as well as offering thermal and acoustic benefits to users.

A total of 18 different formats from Tempio's White Tarifa colour range were combined and an elegant tonal variation was achieved by mixing gloss, satin and matt glaze finishes.
