Rheingold Bushwick

1st Prize Winner Residential category Refin Project Contest 2020

US firm Durukan Design, in this rapidly changing neighborhood – Northern Brooklyn, epitomizes the revival of a more socially engaged designer for a better urban environment for Bushwick residents.

The porcelain surfaces by Refin has been chosen for these life spaces with a strong appeal where the industrial style meets pop art, designed to encourage socialisation and create an interesting community.

The project won the “Residential” category the international competition Refin Project Contest 2020, conceived to reward the best architecture and interior design projects made with Refin tiles.

Rheingold Bushwick's social project in New York is even more than an architectural one: in the fast-moving Northern Brooklyn district, this building with its 35,000 square metres of interior space is a place for socialising, encouraging the daily participation and active involvement of its residents. The shared spaces available in the five hundred flats offers many comforts and services that go beyond the usual gym and laundry room, including, for example, a cinema, beauty salon, climbing wall, yoga, art and music studios, animal welfare centre, squash court and more: the six different Amenity Zones spread over two floors include twenty-eight different recreational spaces alongside a café and areas for work or study.

The interior design incorporates the influences of the art scene and the industrial roots of the area: both the Design Industry Oxyde collection, which evokes the oxidation of metals (in two shades: Dark and Light), and Plant, which is configured as a wood-cement with a délabré taste also expressed by the Ash shade, perfectly interpret the underground style and help emphasise the eclectic mood of this creation.

Plant - A brand-new hybrid industrial material, Plant is a wood-cement with a used-look appeal and a decidedly contemporary allure. The conspicuous scratching on the surface, the signs of wear and tear and the distinctive colours all contribute to shaping the underground atmosphere the collection takes its inspiration from. The neutral Powder and the more classic Ash grey are joined by Clay beige, dark Rope, a markedly reddish shade, Copper, and Iron, a dark blackish-brown shade. The tiles come in 7 medium and large sizes, ideal for enhancing the shading effect once laid: 75x150, 25x150, 45x90, 22,5x90, 75x75, 60x60 and 30x60cm.

Design Industry - Multi-material collection inspired by new urban contexts and contemporary architectural trends: two different surface finishes, in a wide range of sizes and a variety of colour shades, offering great design potential and freedom of choice. The Oxyde version is reminiscent of the patina of rusted metals, with alternating chiaroscuro hues, while Raw interprets the colours and textures of concrete and worn plaster. These characteristics are enhanced fully in the large sizes, which make the most of the graphic features and can be used to create large, continuous surfaces.
