Virtual Space "Hokkaido Rock House" Designed by Sou Fujimoto

Today, we are grateful to introduce Hokkaido Rock House.

It’s a virtual condominium designed by the architect, Sou Fujimoto. The order from us to him was so simple: “Please just design what you like, something to make people feel WOW, the building you want to have in our hometown to revive it (because he is originally from here, Asahikawa, Hokkaido). There’re no legal and budgetary constraints because it’s virtual.”

Sou Fujimoto, answering in the interviews at the time of the press release, said “It was difficult to keep the balance between reality and virtual reality. I had to limit myself in order to make it look real to some degree.” To be honest, I wanted him to lift all such restrictions, though. When I talked with him after the interview, the impolite thought came out from my mouth “I thought you would design something like the painting of René Magritte, the Castle of the Pyrenees.” He, with a smile, answered “Once I did it but missed out in some design competition in the Middle East, but I still like the idea and will give it a try again.” In addition to his outstanding talent, this friendliness is one of the reasons for his popularity.

Now, let’s go back to the subject of Hokkaido Rock House, and let me detail it a little more. It is located somewhere in the highest mountain range in the center of Hokkaido. The area is so beautiful but designated as a national park, and so, no one can build anything there in reality, of course. The interior is equipped with our furniture. We’ve placed our products that suit best without thought of budget. The gimmick I like is the button to change the scenes to the night view version. Please give it a try. In the next paragraph, I’d like to close this article by translating the introduction of Hokkaido Rock House by Sou Fujimoto.

The architectural concept of Hokkaido Rock House by Sou Fujimoto

Inspired by the nature of Hokkaido, where CondeHouse is based, and where I was born and raised, I came up with an architecture that could be harmonized with nature beautifully. It looks like something from the primordial and future world at the same time, funnily enough. Inside the building, some elegant wooden furniture by CondeHouse is surrounded by rugged rock walls. In a sense, we may have created a building that symbolizes the harmony and conflict between nature and us humans.
