Designed by Grijsen for the Delfzijl sea dyke, this urban bench features flowing, wave-like lines that blend naturally into the waterfront landscape.
On the sea dyke in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, a 10-metre-long custom-made bench now offers visitors a unique place to sit and enjoy views over the Ems estuary and the beach.
Designed and manufactured by Grijsen, this piece of urban furniture stands out for its distinctive wave-like shape, specially developed to follow the curves of the waterfront and integrate naturally into its surroundings. The project illustrates how custom-made street furniture can become an integral part of public space design.
Designed specifically for the site
The project was carried out with the support of Stichting Maurits Fundatie, a foundation that supports initiatives aimed at improving quality of life in Delfzijl and the surrounding area.
As part of Delfzijl’s urban transformation, HKB Stedenbouwkundigen proposed this custom creation by Grijsen to respond to the specific characteristics of the site.
The attention to detail extends to the finishing touches: the inscription “Made possible with the support of Stichting Maurits Fundatie” was milled directly into the wood of the bench.
From design to installation
Creating this 10-metre-long piece required precision at every stage. The individual wooden components were CNC-cut to achieve the desired shape, then carefully checked before being assembled and joined using finger joints.
The components were then mounted onto the structure to create the bench’s characteristic wave-like silhouette. Following a final inspection, the complete bench was transported to the site and installed on the Delfzijl sea dyke by the Grijsen team.
Through this project, urban furniture becomes an integral element in the composition of public space. Custom-made solutions make it possible to respond to the specific constraints of a site while combining functionality, durability, identity and harmonious integration into the landscape.
