Steel Grating for the Mining Sector: Production of 2,000 m² of Custom-Made Grating, from Design to Manufacturing in 4 Weeks
A complete supply for a mining plant in West Africa
For an extensive gold mine located in West Africa, EMMEGI S.p.A. provided the complete supply of electroforged steel grating panels for the mineral processing plant.
The project required the management of approximately 2,000 m² of grating, custom-developed for various areas of the plant and manufactured according to the geometries required by the project layout. Custom production, hot-dip galvanizing, and packaging in strapped bundles suitable for sea transport were completed in just 4 weeks, allowing the site assembly schedule to be met.
The Project: A mineral processing plant requires walkways capable of guaranteeing safety, strength, and reliability even under severe operating conditions. The complexity of the project stemmed from the need to panel numerous technical areas, often characterized by irregular geometries and the presence of piping, conveyor belts, agitators, and pre-existing steel structures.
The solution had to meet four requirements simultaneously:
- Mechanical strength and durability in an environment characterized by abrasive dust, dynamic loads, and continuous traffic.
- Operator safety, even in the presence of water, sludge, and process reagents.
Dimensional accuracy, to adapt to the specific geometries of the different areas.
- Speed of delivery, essential to avoid compromising the assembly schedule and the site's complex logistics.
In this context, electroforged steel grating proved to be a particularly suitable solution thanks to its combination of robustness, drainage, anti-slip properties, modularity, and rapid installation. EMMEGI S.p.A. managed the supply end-to-end (360°), from executive shop drawings aligned with the plant's geometry to the production of installation-ready panels.
Design of Panel Layout Drawings: The EMMEGI technical team developed the executive installation drawings for the various areas, defining the layout, dimensions, cuts, and fabrications.
Custom Production and Fabrication: The supply comprised approximately 2,000 m² of electroforged steel grating with a 34×38 mm mesh and 30×3 mm bearing bar, in hot-dip galvanized steel. Each panel was custom-made and identified with a tag to indicate its exact location on the mining plant decks.
Two configurations were used:
- Smooth surface, for general technical areas;
- Serrated anti-slip surface, for platforms, walkways, and areas most exposed to slip risks.
The material was cut to size and to drawing specifications, including circular sector geometries and toe-plates. The entire production cycle, including galvanizing, was completed in just 4 weeks. EMMEGI S.p.A. also managed the entire logistics process, from packaging to organizing international shipment via Open Top containers.
Results: The collaboration between EMMEGI and the client made it possible to turn a complex order—due to volume, geometries, and the remote site location—into an installation-ready supply delivered on schedule. Detailed engineering, production, and logistics were handled by a single point of contact, simplifying project management.
The project demonstrates EMMEGI S.p.A.'s ability to manage large-scale, complex supplies by combining technical expertise, custom manufacturing, and logistics—from engineering to shipping—even for remote and complex job sites.
