Oslo Opera House

LED technology used for general lighting

The Oslo Opera House is the largest cultural complex that has been built in Norway in the last 700 years. It lies in the heart of the country’s capital and takes up an area of 38,000 sq. m. It was designed by the architecture firm Snøhetta and fits in perfectly with the surrounding space, uniting the soft sea waves with the harsh mainland. The building stands out thanks to its neomodernistic shape and is constructed of marble and wood – a nod towards the rawness of the Norwegian fjords. The Oslo Opera House building is the first of our projects, where LED technology was used not only for decorative lighting, but also for general lighting. Especially for this project, we developed the OPERA luminaire system, which has exceptional IP67 ingress protection, allowing for the illumination of the building from the seaside. The final result has gained recognition from the European Commission and the Mies van der Rohe Foundation, which awarded it the highest prize for contemporary architecture.
