Fuksas' Cloud

Supplied product: Ninfa

Massimiliano Fuksas has chosen Ninfa, the transparent and fully secure balustrade by Faraone, for the new Congress Centre “La Nuvola” in Rome, EUR area.

Inauguration of the Congress Centre in Rome: October 29th, 2016.

More than 800 meters of Ninfa balustrade have been used by the Fuksas Studio inside and outside of the “Teca”.

Total volume: 281 square meters.

The renowned architect has worked on three architectural concepts the Teca (Theca), the Nuvola (Cloud) and the Lama (Blade), and he has used 3 main materials such as glass, metal and fiberglass.

The Teca, oriented longitudinally, is the container with steel structure and double glass facade that encloses the Nuvola.

The Nuvola is the centerpiece of the project. Its constriction inside the “box” space of the Teca highlights the comparison between the free unregulated spatial articulation and a geometrically defined form. Inside the Nuvola are: an auditorium with 1760 seats, dining facilities and the auditorium support services. The Nuvola is undoubtedly the core element of the architectural project: the structure in steel ribs, with an extraordinary visual effect, is covered by a transparent sheet of 15,000 square meters.

The hotel, also called “the Blade”, offers 441 rooms and it has been thought as an independent and autonomous structure.

On the basement level of the complex there is a parking lot for 600 cars.

The complex is a highly flexible building, capable of hosting conferences and exhibitions, with a capacity that reaches a total of nearly 9,000 seats, divided between the auditorium inside the Nuvola, which can accommodate 1,760 people, and the large convention rooms for a total of 6,500 seats.

The design of the new Congress Centre is characterized by an eco-friendly approach, namely a set of choices to reduce energy consumption.

An air variable displacement of the air conditioning system has been adopted. It provides optimal power consumption based on the actual overcrowding of the premises; the Theca cover provides, instead, the photovoltaic elements that allow a natural production of electricity and the protection of the building from overheating by mitigation of the solar radiation, as well as allowing a significant saving in energy consumption as compared to those required to obtain the conditioning of the whole volume with traditional systems.

The Faraone company is satisfied with the inclusion of its product in a project of international importance such as the Fuksas’ Cloud. The Ninfa balustrade has a resistance to the thrust of 300 kg/m, and bears an impact of 600 Joules. For this project, laboratory tests and on-site tests on the system with aluminium base and tempered laminated safety glass 12+12 +1.52 PVB have been carried out, as usual.

In close contact with the Fuksas Studio, all the design problems have been solved and a maximum architectural integration has been achieved.

The Temple of Augustus in Pozzuoli, the Seat Palace of Lecce, the Cloud by Fuksas, the Mugello Racing Circuit, the Udine stadium, private buildings and villas are just some of the more complex projects that the Faraone company has made with its own product, the Ninfa balustrade.

The Faraone company is always ready for new challenges.
