Figueras wins a Sustainability award with the ‘Biennale’ chair, designed by Josep Ferrando Bramona

Figueras International Seating has received the 1st Catalunya Ecodisseny award with the ‘Biennale’ chair, developed in collaboration with the architect Josep Ferrando. The chair, designed for collective spaces, has obtained this European prize for being a “very attractive, iconic and poetic chair”, among other aspects. It was presented in the in the ‘Product in Development’ category.

The jury also commended aspects such as the mono-material construction of the chair, the fact that it is fully composed of wood sourced from certified forests, its design centred around fractal geometry; the simplicity of its shapes, that impact in the efficient use of raw materials; the joining system, free of metal components, its easy production and low energy costs and its easy recycling capabilities.

The 1st Ecodisseny award was presented by the Department of Territory and Sustainability of the Generalitat de Catalunya and has a jury comprised of international experts in design and sustainability. The award acknowledges products designed in Europe to improve environmental performance throughout their life-cycle.

In this first edition of the award, a total of one-hundred and ninety-four nominations from all Europe were received, of which five were eventually selected in the categories of ‘Product’, ‘Product in Development’, ‘Strategy’, ‘Young Design’ and ‘Euro-Mediterranean Design’. The event was hosted in Saló del Tinell, Barcelona.
