Terrazzo effect porcelain floors, innovation for a classic that is making a strong comeback

Variety of designs and shades for a type of flooring and cladding that fits perfectly into any interior design project

Sometimes we look back and see that trends that we thought would never return have been completely renewed, as is the case of terrazzo, which returns to the forefront of decorative trends completely renovated and away from the old floors that we usually think of when we talk about this material.

Certainly, it is almost inevitable to associate terrazzo with the classic floors of schools and old houses, but this idea has taken a very important turn, and now it is part of modern and sophisticated decoration.

A material with a history

Terrazzo originated in Venice in the 15th century, when artisans began to collect marble pebbles and mix them with clay, then polish them and place them on terraces, hence the name terrazzo. Over time, the clay began to be replaced by cement, which improved its durability.

Originally, terrazzo consisted of a white and/or simple cement mortar mixed with crushed marble in various proportions. Depending on the project and its specifications, colorants may be used and often other elements such as sandstone, glass and other stones are also added.

During the 1960s and 1970s, it was one of the most popular trends because it was an economical and durable material. Subsequently, this material was completely forgotten, and it was not until 2018 when it began to reappear by the hand of the main international design events such as Cersaie or Cevisama.

Today, terrazzo returns to our lives in a new way and with more possibilities. Porcelain tiles that imitate terrazzo have been completely renewed, adding colors and finishes to match any decor. For all these reasons, nowadays, porcelain terrazzo is used to decorate modern and elegant rooms, with an aesthetic effect far removed from the outdated image associated with this material.

One of the most interesting characteristics of this material is the continuity and visual uniformity that it allows, but the advantages compared to the original are many more, such as, for example:

• It is a product with high resistance and great durability.

• It does not require any specific maintenance, except for periodic cleaning with water and products for regular use.

• Variety of designs and tones.

• Porcelain tiles are lighter and easier to install.

Colors

Porcelain tiles that emulate terrazzo are an excellent choice if the purpose is to decorate with a focus on color. Their original designs allow you to create unique spaces where elegance and boldness coexist in equal parts.

In this sense, gray is generally the most popular tone, along with black. However, one of the great advantages of imitation terrazzo tiles is that almost all fashionable colors are repeatable, such as beige, which is positioned as one of the most demanded colors. An example of this trend is the new Marmeta collection by Gayafores, available in Cream, Grey and Dark tones.

Terrazzo in different rooms

Thanks to the diversity of designs and shades of terrazzo, there is a multitude of ideas to incorporate this trend in the decoration of our home.

The kitchen, of course, has also succumbed to this new trend, where terrazzo pieces can be placed on the floor, creating a visual continuity, and throughout the cladding, allowing all the attention to be focused on the walls.

The same happens in the case of bathrooms, where, in addition, all the advantages of the porcelain material in terms of hygiene and ease of cleaning are applied.

In short, the "new terrazzo" is a reality that fills all types of spaces and surfaces in the home, thanks to its timeless designs and the multiple possibilities it opens up for contemporary interior design.
