Montale Highschool in Pontedera (Siena, Italy)
Shared planning for an innovative school model
The new Eugenio Montale High School in Pontedera, inaugurated in early 2025, represents a significant case study in the panorama of contemporary school construction.
The intervention was born from an integrated design process that saw the synergic collaboration between public bodies, designers, school and technical partners - including the architects of ‘Colucci & Partners’. In this context, GAM Gonzagarredi Montessori played a key role in defining the learning environments, helping to translate pedagogical principles into concrete furniture and layout solutions.
GAM's contribution was not only technical but also methodological: the project was developed through a participatory design process, in which the needs of the end users - teachers, students and school staff - were listened to, collected and translated into functional solutions consistent with the educational goals.
The environments at Montale were designed to guarantee
- Maximum flexibility in educational organisation, thanks to mobile and reconfigurable furniture modules.
- Acoustic and luminous comfort, with particular attention to the quality of materials.
- Continuity between collective and individual spaces, enhancing student autonomy.
- Use of natural materials, consistent with the Montessori approach, to stimulate a healthy and harmonious relationship with the environment.
The Liceo Montale is not just a new building, but a replicable model of the school of the future: sustainable, welcoming, pedagogically oriented. For GAM, it is further confirmation that space is a fundamental ally in educational processes.
